The 'Retirada' was the retreat from Franco's attack of democracy across the border into France. Many crossed at Col de Lly where there is a memorial. This gate is on the frontier and is the route that many passed through to escape fascism. Others passed through in the other direction to join the International Brigades.The route off the Retirada is now marked as a long distance walk.
