Lost hunting dog

Lost hunting dog

Hunting with dogs is very popular in the Drome, though La Combe forbids it. The style of hunting is to use dogs that sniff out prey but don't attack. This old bloodhound wandered onto the farm one day. It had bright collars on, a bell and a radio transmitter for tracking. Apparently the bell is meant to alert the prey that they are being tracked and encourage them to bolt. I met a couple of these dogs and they were both the most biddable and ineffectual creatures. The bright collars are to prevent them being shot in error. Indeed the hunters themselves top off their camofluage gear with bright red baseball caps for the same reason. I did worry when resting on the hill I could hear the bell of one of these dogs approaching. I took care not to make any sudden movements (if you get my drift).
