This dates back to the late 80s when elements of the Anglican church were demonstrating greater radicalism than the Labour Party. A church in Manchester had given sanctuary to Viraj to try to prevent his deportation to Sri Lanka. It was one of the finest campaigns of that decade. It didn't meet its target but had some wonderful outcomes.
